Sore throat in measles

麻疹喉痛 〔麻疹喉痛〕má zhěn hóu tòng

Sore throat due to measles toxin attacking the throat. Sore throat in measles usually arises when the exterior evil is depressed so that the measles toxin cannot effuse smoothly, or when there is intense heat in the interior. Mild cases are marked by sore swollen throat; severe cases by difficulty in swallowing even soup or water.

Medicinal therapy: For exterior depression, clear, resolve, and outthrust the evil with Scrophularia and Cimicifuga Decoction (玄参升麻汤 xuán shēn shēng má tāng). For intense interior heat, clear the interior and resolve toxin with schizonepeta (Schizonepetae Herba, 荆芥 jīng jiè), saposhnikovia (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 防风 fáng fēng), forsythia (Forsythiae Fructus, 连翘 lián qiào), mint (Menthae Herba, 薄荷 bò hé), scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩 huáng qín), gardenia (Gardeniae Fructus, 山栀子 shān zhī zǐ), licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix, 甘草 gān cǎo), mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas, 芒硝 máng xiāo), rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄 dà huáng), and arctium (Arctii Fructus, 牛蒡子 niú bàng zǐ).
