Sore throat due to measles toxin attacking the throat. Sore throat in measles usually arises when the exterior evil is depressed so that the measles toxin cannot effuse smoothly, or when there is intense heat in the interior. Mild cases are marked by sore swollen throat; severe cases by difficulty in swallowing even soup or water.
Medicinal therapy: For exterior depression, clear, resolve, and outthrust the evil with Scrophularia and Cimicifuga Decoction (玄参升麻汤xuán shēn shēng má tāng). For intense interior heat, clear the interior and resolve toxin with schizonepeta (Schizonepetae Herba, 荆芥jīng jiè), saposhnikovia (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 防风fáng fēng), forsythia (Forsythiae Fructus, 连翘lián qiào), mint (Menthae Herba, 薄荷bò hé), scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩huáng qín), gardenia (Gardeniae Fructus, 山栀子shān zhī zǐ), licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix, 甘草gān cǎo), mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas, 芒硝máng xiāo), rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 大黄dà huáng), and arctium (Arctii Fructus, 牛蒡子niú bàng zǐ).
