Shivering

战栗 〔戰慄〕zhàn lì

Trembling with a subjective sensations of cold. Occurring in malaria, it comes at regular intervals and is followed by high fever. In other febrile diseases, it is a sign of exuberant interior heat preventing yáng qì from effusing to the exterior and is treated by clearing heat or outthrusting evil. Shivering may also occur in yáng qì vacuity patterns without heat effusion and with a fine vacuous pulse. In such cases, it is treated by supporting yáng using formulas such as Astragalus Center-Fortifying Decoction (黄芪建中汤 huáng qí jiàn zhōng tāng) or Cinnamon Twig Decoction Plus Aconite (桂枝加附子汤 guì zhī jiā fù zǐ tāng).
