Rigid center

强中 〔強中〕qiáng zhōng

1. Also yīn protrusion (1). Lasting stiff erections with spontaneous discharge of semen or inability to ejaculate. Rigid center has been attributed to excessive consumption of elixirs containing metals, exuberant internal fire toxin, and to excessive libido causing liver-kidney yīn depletion and yáng hyperactivity.

Biomedical correspondence: priapism.

Medicinal therapy: Enrich yīn and drain fire. Use Gypsum and Apricot-Leaved Adenophora Decoction (石子荠苨汤 shí zǐ jì ní tāng) or Coptis and Pig’s Stomach Pill (黄连猪肚丸 huáng lián zhū dǔ wán). For exuberant fire and yīn vacuity, add scrophularia (Scrophulariae Radix, 玄参 xuán shēn), ophiopogon (Ophiopogonis Radix, 麦门冬 mài mén dōng), and dried/fresh rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix, 生地黄 shēng dì huáng). For debilitation of kidney qì and frenetic stirring of vacuity fire, warm and supplement the kidney origin using Cistanche Pill (苁蓉丸 cōng róng wán) from A Unified Treatise on Diseases, Patterns, and Remedies According to the Three Causes (三因极一病症方论 sān yīn jí yī bìng zhèng fāng lùn) or Velvet Deerhorn Pill (鹿茸丸 lù róng wán) from The Great Peace Sagacious Benevolence Formulary (太平圣惠方 tài píng shèng huì fāng). See yáng rigidity.

2. A type of dispersion-thirst pattern.
