Returning fire to its source

引火归原 〔引火歸原〕 yǐn huǒ guī yuán

A method of treatment used to address upbearing kidney fire using medicinals that enrich kidney yīn and conduct fire downward. Upbearing kidney fire is a pattern of upper body heat and lower body cold characterized by floating red complexion, dizziness, tinnitus, ulceration of the mouth and tongue, loose teeth, aching lumbus and weak legs, cold in the lower extremities, tender-red tongue, and a vacuous pulse.

Medicinal therapy: Combine kidney-enriching medicinals such as cooked rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 熟地黄 shú dì huáng), dioscorea (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 山药 shān yào), cornus (Corni Fructus, 山茱萸 shān zhū yú), schisandra (Schisandrae Fructus, 五味子 wǔ wèi zǐ), and ligustrum (Ligustri Lucidi Fructus, 女贞子 nǚ zhēn zǐ), with aconite (Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, 附子 fù zǐ) and cinnamon bark (Cinnamomi Cortex, 肉桂 ròu guì), which supplement true yáng and conduct fire downward.
