Repletion is treated by draining the child
实则泻其子 〔實則瀉其子〕 shí zé xiè qí zǐ
Use of the mother-child, i.e., the engendering, relationship of the five phases involving the draining of the viscus that is the child of a viscus affected by repletion. For example, since liver-wood engenders heart-fire, the liver is the mother and the heart is the child. Hence, liver repletion can be treated not only by draining the liver but also by draining heart-fire. Thus, for example, the method of draining heart fire can be combined with that of calming and draining the liver to treat repletion fire signs such as headache, dizziness, tinnitus, impatience, agitation, and irascibility, red face and red ears, scorching pain in the chest and rib-side, yellow or reddish urine, bitter taste in the mouth, constipation, yellow tongue fur, and a rapid stringlike pulse.
