Night cough

夜嗽 〔夜嗽〕yè sòu

Cough occurring only at night and not in the day. Night cough is attributable to depletion of kidney yīn and yīn vacuity fire flaming upward. The cough comes in continual bouts that do not abate until dawn. In some cases, there may be bitter mouth and rib-side pain, and poor appetite.

Medicinal therapy: Nourish yīn and downbear fire with Yīn-Enriching Clearing Transforming Pill (滋阴清化丸 zī yīn qīng huà wán) or Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill (六味地黄丸 liù wèi dì huáng wán) plus asparagus (Asparagi Radix, 天门冬 tiān mén dōng) and ophiopogon (Ophiopogonis Radix, 麦门冬 mài mén dōng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on back transport points, LU, and KI. Select BL-13 (Lung Transport, 肺俞 fèi shù), BL-43 (Gāo-Huāng Transport, 膏肓俞 gāo huāng shù), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), and KI-6 (Shining Sea, 照海 zhào hǎi); needle with supplementation or with even supplementation and drainage.
