Needle sickness
晕针 〔暈針〕 yūn zhēn
Sickness induced by acupuncture treatment and characterized by dizziness, vomiting, oppression in the chest, somber-white complexion, fixed eyes and torpid spirit, and, in severe cases, cold sweating and reversal cold in the limbs. Needle sickness is usually the result of excessively strong needle manipulation in persons who are unused to acupuncture treatment, are nervous, tired, hungry, or in a weak state of health.
Management: Remove all the needles and allow the patient to lie flat. When the patient is fully conscious, he or she can be given a warm drink with cookies. In more severe cases, it may be necessary to needle GV-26 (Human Center, 人中 rén zhōng) with PC-9 (Central Hub, 中冲 zhōng chōng) or ST-36 (Leg Three Lǐ, 足三里 zú sān lǐ).
