Kidney... its bloom is in the hair

肾… 其华在发 〔腎… 其華在髮〕 shèn... qí huá zài fà

This line, from Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn) is interpreted to mean that the general condition of the hair, hair growth, and hair loss are all associated with the strength of the kidney essential qì. Loss of hair in old age is one sign of debilitation of essential qì. However, the hair also relies on the nourishing action of the blood, so it is also said, the hair [of the head] is the surplus of the blood.
