Insufflation

吹药 〔吹藥〕 chuī yào

A powder used to treat ear, nose, throat, and mouth diseases that is blown into the orifice, traditionally through rolled up paper, fine bamboo tubes or straws. A sore swollen throat with qì block in children, for example, can be treated by insufflating Throat Insufflation Powder (吹喉散 chuī hóu sǎn), a formula composed of ground raw licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix Cruda, 生甘草 shēng gān cǎo) and impure mirabilite (Mirabilitum Non-Purum, 朴硝 pò xiāo), into the throat. Chronic paranasal sinusitis can be treated by insufflating powdered calcined yellow croaker’s otolith (Pseudosciaenae Otolithum, 鱼脑石 yú nǎo shí) into the nose. Common cold with nasal congestion can be treated by insufflating powdered centipeda (Centipedae Herba, 鹅不食草 é bù shí cǎo) into the nose. See nasal insufflation.
