A warm disease pattern arising when evil first enters the qì aspect. The main signs include generalized heat effusion, thirst, heart vexation, anguish, and mixed yellow and white tongue fur. Initial-stage qì-aspect heat is treated with Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction (栀子豉汤zhī zǐ chǐ tāng) to clear heat and outthrust evils. The main formula treating exuberant lung-stomach heat is Supplemented Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Gypsum, and Licorice Decoction (加味麻杏石甘汤jiā wèi má xìng shí gān tāng), which clears heat and diffuses the lung. This formula may be combined with heat-clearing phlegm-transforming formulas such as Minor Chest Bind Decoction (小陷胸汤xiǎo xiàn xiōng tāng) and further supplemented with heat-clearing toxin-resolving medicinals such as lonicera (Lonicerae Flos, 金银花jīn yín huā), forsythia (Forsythiae Fructus, 连翘lián qiào), scutellaria (Scutellariae Radix, 黄芩huáng qín), and gardenia (Gardeniae Fructus, 山栀子shān zhī zǐ).
