Four-aspect pattern identification

卫气营血辨证 〔衛氣營血辨證〕wèi qì yíng xuè biàn zhèng

The process of diagnosing a morbid condition as a warm disease pattern reflecting penetration of the evil to any of four distinct aspects or levels, namely defense (wèi), qì, provisioning (yíng), and blood.

According to doctrine of warm diseases, warm evils invade the body to first affect defense, and then progress, unless halted by right qì or treatment, through the other aspects. When disease affects defense, sweat-effusing treatment may be given. Only when it reaches the qì aspect can qì-clearing treatment be prescribed. When it enters provisioning, treatment involves outthrusting heat to the qì aspect. Finally, when it reaches blood and causes depletion and frenetic movement, blood cooling and dispersion is prescribed. See the following items:
