Attacking phlegm

攻痰 〔攻痰〕 gōng tán

A method of treatment used to address stagnant, binding phlegm such as occurs in epilepsy, mania, and withdrawal, or in child fright wind characterized by gurgling phlegm congesting the throat, and convulsions of the limbs. The main medicinals used are chlorite/mica (Chloriti seu Micae Lapis, 礞石 méng shí) and lepidium/descurainiae (Lepidii/Descurainiae Semen, 葶苈子 tíng lì zǐ). A commonly used formula is Chlorite/Mica Phlegm-Rolling Pill (礞石滚痰丸 méng shí gǔn tán wán).
