Draining the lung

泻肺 〔瀉肺〕xiè fèi

Also draining the white. A method of treatment used to eliminate heat from the lung, in the treatment of conditions such as deep-lying lung heat with cough, panting, persistent heat effusion, steaming hot skin that grows more severe at dusk, red tongue with yellow fur, and thin rapid pulse.

Medicinal therapy: A commonly used lung-draining formula is White-Draining Powder (泻白散 xiè bái sǎn) with additions. Since the lung is associated through the five phases with the color white, draining the lung is sometimes referred to as draining the white, as is seen in this formula name.

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on LU and LI. LU-10 (Fish Border, 鱼际 yú jì), LU-5 (Cubit Marsh, 尺泽 chǐ zé), LI-11 (Pool at the Bend, 曲池 qū chí), LU-11 (Lesser Shang, 少商 shào shāng), or LI-1 (Shang Yáng, 商阳 shāng yáng) can be selected and needle with drainage or prick to bleed to drain lung fire.
