Draining the heart

泻心 〔瀉心〕xiè xīn

A method of treatment used to eliminate fire from the heart region, i.e., from the stomach or the heart itself. This method applies to both a) exuberant stomach fire with sore swollen gums, bad breath, clamoring stomach, constipation, red tongue with yellow fur, and a rapid pulse; and b) exuberant heart fire with frenetic movement of the blood (blood ejection, spontaneous external bleeding), constipation, reddish urine, red eye, mouth sores, yellow tongue fur, and rapid pulse. Both these patterns can be treated with Three Yellows Heart-Draining Decoction (三黄泻心汤 sān huáng xiè xīn tāng).

Acumoxatherapy: Base treatment mainly on HT and PC. PC-8 (Palace of Toil, 劳宫 láo gōng), HT-8 (Lesser Mansion, 少府 shào fǔ), PC-9 (Central Hub, 中冲 zhōng chōng), HT-9 (Lesser Surge, 少冲 shào chōng), or GV-26 (Water Trough, 水沟 shuǐ gōu) can be drained or bled with a three-edged needle to drain heart fire.
