Do not use heat against heat

热无犯热 〔熱無犯熱〕 rè wú fàn rè

From Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, liù yuán zhèng jì lùn). In the absence of cold signs in hot weather, hot medicinals should not be given indiscriminately since this could damage liquid and promote the formation of dryness giving rise to a transmutation pattern. However, if there is an exterior cold pattern, warm acrid exterior-effusing medicinals may be used, but in hot summer weather, they should be carefully chosen and their dosages should be kept to a minimum.
