Do not use cold against cold

寒无犯寒 〔寒無犯寒〕 hán wú fàn hán

From Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, liù yuán zhèng jì lùn). In the absence of heat signs in cold winter weather, cold medicinals should not be given indiscriminately since this could damage yáng qì, giving rise to a transmuation pattern. However, if there is an interior pattern of binding heat, cold and cool offensive precipitants can be used, but in cold winter whether, they should be carefully chosen and their dosages should be kept to a minimum.
