Discharge defense and outthrust heat

泄卫透热 〔泄衛透熱〕 xiè wèi tòu rè

To treat warm disease in which evil heat has reached the qì-aspect, causing generalized heat, absence of aversion to cold, vexation and thirst, and yellow tongue fur, but in which the exterior is blocked so that there is no sweating (a sign of a defense aspect block).

Medicinal therapy: Use cool acrid outthrusting medicinals to bring on a mild sweat (draining defense), and make the qì-aspect evil thrust outward through the exterior (outthrusting heat). This method uses medicinals such as duckweed (Spirodelae Herba, 浮萍 fú píng), mint (Menthae Herba, 薄荷 bò hé), fermented soybean (Sojae Semen Praeparatum, 淡豆豉 dàn dòu chǐ), cicada molting (Cicadae Periostracum, 蝉蜕 chán tuì), chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemi Flos, 菊花 jú huā), lonicera (Lonicerae Flos, 金银花 jīn yín huā), forsythia (Forsythiae Fructus, 连翘 lián qiào), and imperata (Imperatae Rhizoma, 白茅根 bái máo gēn).
