LI-14 Upper Arm

臂臑 〔臂臑〕 bì nào

Alternate names: 颈冲 jǐng chōng, Neck Surge; 颈冲 jǐng chōng, Neck Thoroughfare; 头冲 tóu chōng, Head Surge; 头冲 tóu chōng, Head Thoroughfare

Channel: LI, hand yáng brightness (yáng míng) large intestine channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the lateral aspect of the upper arm, superior to the insertion of the deltoid muscle on the humerus, about 2 cùn inferior to the level of the anterior axillary fold on the line connecting LI-11 (qū chí) and LI-15 (jiān yú).

Classical location: Up four cùn from Five Lǐ (LI-13), in the depression between the two sinews and bone, felt when the arm is raised and the hand is held flat. From The Golden Mirror of Medicine (医宗金鑑 yī zōng jīn jiàn)

Local anatomy: The branches of the posterior circumflex humeral artery and vein, the deep brachial artery and vein. The posterior brachial cutaneous nerve; deeper, the radial nerve.

Action: Courses and frees the channels and network vessels; relieves pain.

Modern indications: Shoulder and arm pain; stiff nape and neck; scrofula; eye diseases.

Classical indications: Heat effusion and aversion to cold; hypertonicity of the neck; pain in the back and shoulder preventing the arm from being lifted; thin weak arms.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒0.7 cùn perpendicular or upward oblique insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 5‒10 min.
