BL-49 Ideation Abode

意舍 〔意舍〕 yì shè

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the back, level with the inferior border of the spinous process of the eleventh thoracic vertebra, 3 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classical location: Three cùn either side of the spine, below the eleventh vertebra. The point is found in straight sitting posture. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: Posterior branches of the intercostal artery and vein. Lateral branches of the posterior rami of the 10th and 11th thoracic nerves.

Action: Courses and discharges damp-heat; fortifies spleen yáng.

Modern indications: Abdominal distension; rumbling intestines; diarrhea; retching and vomiting.

Classical indications: Back pain; aversion to wind and cold; abdominal fullness and vacuity distension; efflux diarrhea; dispersion-thirst; jaundice and yellowing of the eyes; reddish urine.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5 cùn downward oblique insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 5‒30 min.

Point name meaning:

BL-49 is located 1.5 cùn lateral to Spleen Transport (pí shù, BL-20). Spleen qì resides at these points and since the spleen stores the faculty of ideation (Sù Wèn脾藏意), BL-49 is called Ideation Abode. See acupoint names: origins, meanings, and translations.
