SI-19 Auditory Palace

听宫 〔聽宮〕 tīng gōng

Alternate names: 多所闻 duō suǒ wén, More Heard; 所闻 suǒ wén, Heard

Channel: SI, hand greater yáng (tài yáng) small intestine channel

Modern location: An acupoint located immediately anterior to the ear, level with the midpoint of the tragus.

Classical location: At the pearl of the ear, which is the size of an adzuki bean. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The auricular branches of the superficial temporal artery and vein. Branch of the facial nerve, the auriculotemporal nerve.

Action: Frees the channel and network vessels; opens the ear orifices; relieves pain; boosts visual and hearing acuity.

Modern indications: Deafness; tinnitus; toothache; purulent ear; mania and withdrawal; epilepsy.

Classical indications: Arm pain; toothache; pain in the heart [region] and abdomen; withdrawal disease.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.2‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3‒5 cones; pole 5 min.

Needle sensation: Distension, sometimes spreading into the ear.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the small intestine and hand and foot lesser yáng (shào yáng) channels (TB and GB).

Point name meaning:

SI-19 is located just in front of the ear and is employed to treat many kinds of ear disorders, such as purulent ear discharge, deafness, and tinnitus. Its importance in treating these disorders is underlined by the epithet palace. See acupoint names: origins, meanings, and translations.
