Use: Medicinal

Actions and indications: Fortifies the spleen and transforms dampness. Treats similar in effects to baibiandou but is milder and less clogging. It is usually used for summerheat-damp with vomiting and diarrhea.

Dosage and method: Oral: Decoct (6–9g).

Product description: The dried seed coat is irregular in shape, shriveled, and of varying size. It is cream-colored or pale yellow with sheen, and with a white crescent-shaped caruncle. This seed coat is hard and brittle.

Quality: Large yellowish-white seed coats are the best.

Production area: Most parts of China, especially Húnán, ānhuī, Hénán, Zhèjiāng); also produced in Japan.

Etymology: The name biǎn dòu yī 扁豆衣 means flat-bean coat.
