Properties: Sour, astringent; warm.
Channel entry: Large intestine channels.
Indications:
- Astringes the intestines and checks diarrhea: Enduring diarrhea or dysentery; prolapse of the rectum.
- Kills worms: Roundworm; pinworm; tapeworm.
- Additional actions: Shí liú pí astringes essence, checks vaginal discharge, and stanches bleeding.
- It may be used for seminal emission, vaginal discharge, and flooding and spotting.
Dosage & Method: Oral: 3–10g in decoctions; usually used raw for decoctions or stir-fried for use in pills and powders. The char-fried form is used to stanch bleeding.
Warnings: Pomegranate peel contains punicine, a toxic substance that is soluble in fat. While taking shí liú pí, oily or fatty foods (or medications) should be strictly avoided.
Quality: Thick solid reddish-brown skins are the best.
