Category: Water-disinhibiting dampness-percolating agents / Urine-disinhibiting strangury-freeing agents

Properties: Bland, bitter; cold.

Channel entry: Enters the heart, lung, small intestine, and bladder channels .

Indications:

Similar in action to Mù tōng (木通 Akebiae Trifoliatae Caulis, trifoliate akebia) and used interchangeably with it. It is used for water swelling, strangury, mouth sores, amenorrhea, scant breast milk, and impediment pain of the joints. Though not toxic, it should be used with care in pregnancy.

Dosage & Method: Oral: 3–6 g in decoctions.

Warnings: All forms of mù tōng are used with caution in pregnancy.
