Sea Cucumber Gruel
海参粥 〔海參粥〕 hǎi shēn zhōu

Ingredients
- Hǎi shēn (海参 Stichopus Japonicus , sea cucumber)
- Jīng mǐ (粳米 Oryzae Semen, non-glutinous rice) (or Nuò mǐ (糯米 Oryzae Glutinosae Semen, glutinous rice)) 60g
Actions: Supplements the kidney, boosts essence, and nourishes the blood.
Indications: Essence-blood depletion, general vacuity, seminal emission, and frequent urination.
Method: Soak the sea cucumber, cut open and clean out (this is normally done by those the seller), cut into slices and boil until tender. Boil together with the rice to make a gruel.
Rationale: Hǎi shēn, which is also called trepang, is warm and salty and enters the kidney channel. It supplements the kidney and boosts essence, nourishes the blood and moistens dryness. According to modern research, its principal features are it high protein content (21.5%) and low fat content (1.85%). It also contains calcium, phosphorus, iron, and large amounts of iodine.
