Peony Decoction
芍药汤 〔芍藥湯〕sháo yào tāng

Ingredients:
- Sháo yào (芍药 Paeoniae Radix, peony [root]) 15g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 10g
- Huáng lián (黄连 Coptidis Rhizoma, coptis [root]) 10g
- Dà huáng (大黄 Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, rhubarb) 10g
- Bīng láng (槟榔 Arecae Semen, areca [nut]) 10g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (stir–fried) 5g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 10g
- Mù xiāng (木香 Aucklandiae Radix, costusroot) 10g
- Ròu guì (肉桂 Cinnamomi Cortex, cinnamon bark) 2g
Action: Clears damp-heat; moves qì and blood; conducts stagnation.
Indication: Dysentery with abdominal pain, tenesmus, and pus and blood in the stool.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Bái sháo, Ròu guì, Dà huáng, and Dāng guī disperse and expel malign blood, check dysentery, and relieve tenesmus. Dà huáng combined with Ròu guì has a strong blood moving action, while Ròu guì, when combined with Dà huáng, disperses malign blood without fanning the fire. Huáng lián and Huáng qín clear heat and resolve toxin, as well as drying dampness. Mù xiāng and Bīng láng regulate qì and abduct stagnation. Gān cǎo combined with Bái sháo relax tension and relieve pain.
