Trichosanthes and Arctium Decoction

Ingredients:
- Guā lóu rén (瓜蒌仁 Trichosanthis Semen, trichosanthes seed) 12–15g
- Niú bàng zǐ (牛蒡子 Arctii Fructus, arctium [seed]) 9–12g
- Tiān huā fěn (天花粉 Trichosanthis Radix, trichosanthes root) 9–12g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 9–12g
- Shān zhī (山栀 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) 9–12g
- Yín huā (银花 Lonicerae Flos, lonicera [flower]) 9–12g
- Lián qiào (连翘 Forsythiae Fructus, forsythia [fruit]) 9–12g
- Zào jiǎo cì (皂角刺 Gleditsiae Spina, gleditsia thorn) 9–12g
- Qīng pí (青皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, unripe tangerine peel) 3–6g
- Chén pí (陈皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel) 3–6g
- Chái hú (柴胡 Bupleuri Radix, bupleurum [root]) 3–6g
- Shēng gān cǎo (生甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix Cruda, raw licorice [root]) 3–6g
Action: Courses the liver and clears heat; resolves toxin and disperses welling-abscess (yōng).

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Mammary welling-abscess (rǔ yōng, equivalent to mastitis in biomedicine) is attributed to binding depression of heat toxin in the liver channel. This formula uses Guā lóu zǐ, Niú bàng zǐ, Jīn yín huā, raw Gān cǎo, Tiān huā fěn, and Zào jiǎo cì to disperse welling-abscess (yōng), and Chén pí, Qīng pí, Chái hú, Huáng qín, and Zhī zǐ to course the liver and drain fire. This formula is very effective for mammary welling-abscess still in the initial stages.
