Dike-Strengthening Pill

巩堤丸 〔鞏隄丸〕 gǒng tí wán

Ingredients

Actions: Warms and supplements the life gate; reduces urine and checks enuresis.

Indications: Debilitation of the life gate fire with frequent urination, incontinence or seminal emission, accompanied by dizziness, aching lumbus, and lack of strength in the legs. Tongue: Pale with slimy white fur. Pulse: Sunken and weak.

Rationale: Fù zǐ, Jiǔ cài zǐ, Tù sī zǐ, and Bǔ gǔ zhī supplement the kidney and invigorate yáng, thereby securing essence and reducing urination. Shú dì huáng supplements kidney yīn, and replenishes essence and marrow. It also helps the other agents supplement kidney yáng. Yì zhì rén supplements the kidney and contains essence, while Wǔ wèi zǐ secures the kidney and constrains qì. Both these agents also address the enuresis. Bái sháo, Shān yào, and Fú líng fortify spleen-earth, helping to reduce urination according to the principle of banking up earth to dam water—a notion clearly reflected in the name of the formula.
