- Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]) 20g
- Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]) (processed) 10g
- Tù sī zǐ (菟丝子 Cuscutae Semen, cuscuta [seed]) 15g
- Bǔ gǔ zhī (补骨脂 Psoraleae Fructus, psoralea [fruit]) 15g
- Jiǔ cài zǐ (韭菜子 Allii Tuberosi Semen, garlic chive seed) 10g
- Yì zhì rén (益智仁 Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus, alpinia [fruit]) 10g
- Běi wǔ wèi (北五味 Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, northern schisandra [berry]) 10g
- Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 15g
- Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 10g
- Shān yào (山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dioscorea [root]) 10g
Actions: Warms and supplements the life gate; reduces urine and checks enuresis.
Indications: Debilitation of the life gate fire with frequent urination, incontinence or seminal emission, accompanied by dizziness, aching lumbus, and lack of strength in the legs. Tongue: Pale with slimy white fur. Pulse: Sunken and weak.
Rationale: Fù zǐ, Jiǔ cài zǐ, Tù sī zǐ, and Bǔ gǔ zhī supplement the kidney and invigorate yáng, thereby securing essence and reducing urination. Shú dì huáng supplements kidney yīn, and replenishes essence and marrow. It also helps the other agents supplement kidney yáng. Yì zhì rén supplements the kidney and contains essence, while Wǔ wèi zǐ secures the kidney and constrains qì. Both these agents also address the enuresis. Bái sháo, Shān yào, and Fú líng fortify spleen-earth, helping to reduce urination according to the principle of banking up earth to dam water
—a notion clearly reflected in the name of the formula.
