Poria Skin Decoction
茯苓皮汤 〔茯苓皮湯〕 fú líng pí tāng
Source: Wēn Bìng Tiáo Biàn 温病条辨
Ingredients
- Fú líng pí (茯苓皮 Poriae Cutis, poria skin) 20g
- Shēng yì rén (生薏仁 Coicis Semen Crudum, raw coix seed) 20g
- Tǔ fú líng (土茯苓 Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma, smooth greenbrier [root]) 10g
- Dà fù pí (大腹皮 Arecae Pericarpium, areca husk) 10g
- Tōng cǎo (通草 Tetrapanacis Medulla, rice-paper plant pith) 10g
- Dàn zhú yè (淡竹叶 Lophatheri Herba, lophatherum) 6g
Actions: Clears heat and disinhibits water; moves qì and eliminates dampness.
Indications: Damp-heat (with damp more pronounced than heat) obstructing the triple burner, causing heat effusion, headache and pressure in the head, generalized pain, thirst without large fluid intake, and urinary stoppage. Tongue fur: White and slimy.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Fú líng pí and Zhū líng are sweet-bland dampness-percolating medicinals that also clear heat. Mù tōng, Yì yǐ rén, and Dàn zhú yè disinhibit water and clear heat. These five agents together thus separate and disperse damp-heat. Dà fù pí moves qì and disinhibits water. The formula as a whole makes the damp-heat pass pass with the urine.
