Bupleurum Four Agents Decoction

柴胡四物汤 〔柴胡四物湯〕 chái hú sì wù tāng

Ingredients

Indications: Externally contracted evils penetrating to the reverting yīn characterized by pain extending from the chest to the back and alternating heat effusion and aversion to cold, with symptoms often becoming worse at night. There may also be a pale tongue with dark-purple speckles, and a fine, stringlike pulse, which are signs of vacuity and stasis. Also used for taxation with mild alternating heat effusion and aversion to cold.

Method: Grind to a powder; or, as is the modern convention, reduce the amounts and prepare as a decoction.

Dosage: Powder taken in 9–12g dosages.
