Coix, Aconite, and Patrinia and Powder

薏苡附子败酱散 〔薏苡附子敗醬散〕 yì yǐ fù zǐ bài jiàng sǎn

Ingredients

Actions: Expels pus and disperses swelling.

Indications: Intestinal welling-abscess (yōng) that have already formed pus, without generalized heat effusion with incrusted skin, and tight abdominal skin with a soggy feeling under pressure like a swelling, and a rapid pulse.

Category: External medicine formulas

Method: Grind to a rough powder. Decoct and square-inch-spoonful and take in a single dose.

Warnings: Do not use this formula for intestinal welling-abscess (cháng yōng) of the repletion heat type marked by high fever, large pulse, acute pain, and constipation.

Rationale: Yì yǐ rén and Bài jiàng cǎo not only clear heat and resolve toxin, but also expel pus and disperse welling-abscess (yōng). These two agents therefore attack the evil. Hot acrid Fù zǐ acts as the assistant, its function being to stimulate yáng qì to disperse the binding stagnation. It therefore supports the evil. This formula is for acute attacks of chronic appendicitis in patients suffering from yáng vacuity. It should not be used when signs such as high fever, a tight pulse, severe pain, and constipation are seen. Over recent years, this formula as also been used to treat vaginal discharge due to pelvic inflammation.
