Harmonious Yáng Decoction
阳和汤 〔陽和湯〕yáng hé tāng

Ingredients:
- Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]) 9–30g
- Lù jiǎo jiāo (鹿角胶 Cervi Cornus Gelatinum, deer antler glue) 9–12g
- Bái jiè zǐ (白芥子 Sinapis Albae Semen, white mustard [seed]) 6–9g
- Ròu guì (肉桂 Cinnamomi Cortex, cinnamon bark) 3–6g
- Pào jiāng tàn (炮姜炭 Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum, blast-fried ginger) 2–3g
- Má huáng (麻黄 Ephedrae Herba, ephedra) 2–3g
- Shēng gān cǎo (生甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix Cruda, raw licorice [root]) 3–6g
Action: Warms yáng and supplements vacuity; disperses cold and frees stagnation.
Indication: Yīn flat-abscess (yīn jū) (including bone flat-abscess (gǔ jū) and sloughing flat-abscess (tuō jū), and other conditions such as streaming sores,

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Shú dì huáng warms and supplements provisioning blood. Lù jiǎo shuāng engenders essence and supplements the marrow, nourishes the blood and assists yáng. Ròu guì and blast-charred ginger are mobile and penetrating. These two agents combined with the Shú dì huáng and Lù jiǎo jiāo warm and free the vessels, eliminating congealing cold and phlegm. The Shú dì huáng and Lù jiǎo jiāo are static, but when combined with the Ròu guì and Pào jiāng, they do not clog. Má huáng is penetrates the exterior warming and freeing the interstices. Its harsh nature and sweat-effusing properties are inhibited by the Shú dì huáng. White mustard is a warm acrid agent that sweeps phlegm and disperses binds. Gān cǎo is used raw to resolve toxin.
Variations:
- Yīn flat-abscess (yīn jū) with
qì vacuity : Add Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]) and Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]). Scrofula : Add Sān qī (三七 Notoginseng Radix, notoginseng [root]) and Hǎi zǎo (海藻 Sargassum , sargassum).Crane's-knee wind : Addsangjisheng[1] and Niú xī (牛膝 Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, achyranthes [root]).- Chronic bronchitis: Carefully ad phlegm-transforming cough-relieving agents such as Zǐ wǎn (紫菀 Asteris Radix, aster [root]) and Kuǎn dōng huā (款冬花 Farfarae Flos, coltsfoot).
- Thromboaginitis: Add Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]), Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel), and Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower]).
- Enlargement of the lumbar vertebrae: Tǔ dīng guì (土丁桂 Evolvuli Herba, evolvulus) and Yín yáng huò (淫羊藿 Epimedii Herba, epimedium).
