Arctium Flesh-Resolving Decoction

Ingredients
- Niú bàng zǐ (牛蒡子 Arctii Fructus, arctium [seed]) 12g
- Lián qiào (连翘 Forsythiae Fructus, forsythia [fruit]) 12g
- Bò hé (薄荷 Menthae Herba, mint) 3g
- Jīng jiè (荆芥 Schizonepetae Herba, schizonepeta) 6g
- Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) 10g
- Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]) 10g
- Shí hú (石斛 Dendrobii Herba, dendrobium) 10g
- Xuán shēn (玄参 Scrophulariae Radix, scrophularia [root]) 12g
- Xià kū cǎo (夏枯草 Prunellae Spica, prunella [spike]) 10g
Actions: Dispels wind and clears heat; transforms phlegm and disperses swelling.
Indications: Welling-abscess (yōng) and toxin sores of the head, face, and neck that are characterized by redness, swelling, heat, pain and accompanied by heat effusion, aversion to cold, headache, dry mouth, and short voidings of reddish urine. Tongue: Red with yellow fur. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Niú bàng zǐ is a cold, acrid, and bitter agent that disperses wind-heat, resolves toxin, and disperses swelling. Hence, it is the sovereign agent. Jīng jiè suì and Bò hé help the Niú bàng zǐ to disperse wind-heat in the head and face. Lián qiào, Xià kū cǎo, Mǔ dān pí, Zhī zǐ, and Xuán shēn, when combined with Jīng jiè suì and Bò hé clear and drain heat toxin in the head and face, and aid the other agents to course wind and disperse swelling. Shí hú enriches yīn and engenders liquid, addressing damage to fluids by exuberant heat toxin.
