Mechanical Ejection Brine

盐汤探吐方 〔鹽湯探吐方〕 yán tāng tàn tù fāng

Source: Qiān Jīn Fāng 千金方

Ingredients

Actions: Ejects retained food or toxic food.

Indications: Distension and pain of the stomach duct and abdomen due to voracious eating and drinking; poisonous substances remaining in the stomach; dry cholera (sudden turmoil) characterized by abdominal pain and an ungratified urge to vomit and absence of diarrhea.

Category: Ejection formulas

Method: Take 2–3 bowls dissolved in warm water before performing mechanical emesis (e.g., by having the patient stick his finger down his throat).

Rationale: Salt is normally used for its downbearing and sinking qualities. It was nevertheless traditionally understood that, used in large quantities, it caused water to collect above the diaphragm and cause vomiting. This is a simple and practical treatment for voracious eating or food poisoning.
