Yáng-Supplementing Five-Returning Decoction
补阳还五汤 〔補陽還五湯〕bǔ yáng huán wǔ tāng

Ingredients:
- Shēng huáng qí (生黄芪 Astragali Radix Cruda, raw astragalus [root]) 30–60g
- Dāng guī wěi (当归尾 Angelicae Sinensis Radicis Extremitas, Chinese angelica [root] tail) 6–9g
- Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) 6–9g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 3–9g
- Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel) 3–6g
- Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower]) 3–6g
- Dì lóng (地龙 Pheretima , earthworm) 6–12g
Action: Supplements qì, quickens the blood and frees the network vessels.
Indication: (a) Wind stroke with hemiplegia, deviated eyes and mouth, sluggish speech, and
Category: Blood-rectifying formulas / Blood-quickening stasis-transforming formulas
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: The sovereign agent in this formula is Huáng qí, which supplements the qì and moves the blood. The other agents quicken the blood and free the network vessels. The formula as a whole supplements qì and quickens the blood, dispelling stasis without damaging right qì.
Variations:
Hemiplegia (of recent development): Add Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia) 3 gr in the first 4–5 brews, then omit it.- Cold patterns: Add Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]).
Spleen vacuity : Add Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]) and Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]).- Copious phlegm: Add Fǎ bàn xià (法半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum, pro formula pinellia [rhizome]) and Tiān zhú huáng (天竺黄 Bambusae Concretio Silicea%#%, bamboo sugar).
Loss of speech : Add Shí chāng pú (石菖蒲 Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, acorus [root]) and Yuǎn zhì (远志 Polygalae Radix, polygala [root]).Qì vacuity withstatic blood obstructing the network vessels afterwind stroke : Add Quán xiē (全蝎 Scorpio , scorpion) and Wú gōng (蜈蚣 Scolopendra , centipede).- Infantile
paralysis (aftermath of polio): Add Yín yáng huò (淫羊藿 Epimedii Herba, epimedium) andsangjisheng[1] .
