Major Pinellia Decoction

大半夏汤 〔大半夏湯〕dà bàn xià tāng

Source: Jīn Guì Yào Lüè 金匮要略

Ingredients:

Action: Supplements qì; downbears counterflow and relieves retching.

Indication: Stomach qì vacuity with rheum and damage to yīn due to stomach reflux (fǎn wèi). The signs observed in this condition are vomiting in the evening of food ingested in the morning and vice versa (vomiting in the morning of food ingested in the evening), vomiting of foamy drool, dry bound stool (constipation), and fatigued essence-spirit. Tongue: Pale red with little liquid. Pulse: Soggy.

Category:

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Bàn xià dries dampness and transforms phlegm, and also downbears counterflow and checks vomiting. Rén shēn —or Dǎng shēn— fortifies the spleen and harmonizes the stomach, and combined with Bàn xià does not cause any stagnation. These two agents together promote the upbearing of the clear and downbearing of the turbid. Shēng jiāng, which is normally used to address stomach vacuity with rheum because of its power to transform rheum and check vomiting, is not used in this case because of the damage to yīn by enduring vomiting such as dry bound stool and pale red tongue with little liquid. Honey is used instead because it both supplements the stomach and spleen and moistens the intestines...
