Niter and Alum Powder
硝石矾石散 〔硝石礬石散〕xiāo shí fán shí sǎn

Action: Breaks binds and softens hardness; transforms stasis and disperses accumulations.
Indication: Black jaundice or gallstones.
Category:
Method: Ingredients in equal proportions. The original formula specified preparation as a powder to be taken with a strained wheat gruel. Nowadays, it is made into pills or tablets with flour and water paste.
Dosage: 1–1.5g 2–3 times a day.
Rationale: The stipulation that the formula be taken with strained wheat gruel was intended to safeguard the stomach and intestines. The formula is nowadays used for the treatment of what biomedicine has identified as gallstones. However, the formula was originally devised for the treatment of black jaundice.
