Five-Seed Progeny Pill

五子衍宗丸 〔五子衍宗丸〕 wǔ zǐ yǎn zōng wán

Source: Zhèng Zhì Zhǔn Shéng 证治准绳

Alternate Chinese names: Wǔ zǐ wán (五子丸 Five-Seed Pill); Wǔ zǐ bǔ shèn wán (五子补肾丸 Five-Seed Kidney-Supplementing Pill)

Ingredients

Actions: Supplements the kidney and secures essence.

Indications: Kidney vacuity with signs such as seminal emission, impotence, premature ejaculation, and male infertility (seminal cold) and female infertility.

Rationale: Tù sī zǐ and Gǒu qǐ zǐ supplement the kidney and boost essence. Fù pén zǐ and Wǔ wèi zǐ boost the kidney and secure essence. Chē qián cǎo is a counteracting assistant that disinhibits water and drains fire, so that there is draining in supplementation, and disinhibition in astriction. This is therefore a balanced supplementing formula. This formula is now also used to treat azoospermia and neurasthenia.

Notes: In Chinese, 子 means son as well as seed, so the formula name can also be understood to mean five sons to carry on (yǎn 衍) the ancestral line (zōng).

Similar: Dà bǔ yīn wán (大补阴丸 Major Yīn Supplementation Pill)
