Actions: Supplements the kidney and boosts essence; nourishes the liver and brightens the eyes.
Indications: Liver-kidney insufficiency with aching lumbus and limp legs and knees, impotence, seminal emission, premature ejaculation, frequent urination, dribble after voiding, dizzy head and flowery vision, tinnitus and deafness, vaginal discharge, and habitual miscarriage.
Method: Wash and crush the cuscuta. If fresh seeds are used, increase the quantity to 60–100g. Boil and strain, and add to ready-made gruel and boil for a short while.
Rationale: Tù sī zǐ, mainly produced mainly in north-eastern China (Liáonīng, Jílín, Héběi, Henan, Shāndōng, and Jiāngsū), is an older member of the Chinese materia medica. It is sweet and balanced. It enters the liver and kidney channels, and is hence effective in treating kidney-liver insufficiency.
