Ingredients
- Guā lóu (瓜蒌 Trichosanthis Fructus, trichosanthes [fruit]) 1 piece
- Qīng pí (青皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, unripe tangerine peel) 9g
- Tōng cǎo (通草 Tetrapanacis Medulla, rice-paper plant pith) 6g
- Sī guā luò (丝瓜络 Luffae Fructus Retinervus, loofah) 9g
- Jú luò (橘络 Citri Reticulatae Fructus Fasciculus Vascularis, tangerine pith) 6g
- Jú yè (橘叶 Citri Reticulatae Folium, tangerine leaf) 1 piece
- Yù jīn (郁金 Curcumae Radix, curcuma [root]) 9g
- Jí lí (蒺藜 Tribuli Fructus, tribulus [fruit]) 12g
- Pú gōng yīng (蒲公英 Taraxaci Herba, dandelion) 15g
Actions: Courses the liver and clears heat; frees the network vessels and disperses binds.
Indications: Inhibited flow of breast milk and painful hardening and distension of or even reddening of the breasts with periodic heat effusion with aversion to cold. Tongue: Pale with white fur. Pulse: Stringlike and rapid.
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: The breasts are governed by the yáng brightness and reverting yīn, and hence their disorders are treated through the stomach and liver. Inhibited flow of breast milk is attributable to liver depression and qì stagnation that is transforming into heat. Hence, the method of treatment is to course the liver and clear heat and to free the network vessels and disperse the bind. Guā lóu fruit clears heat and disperses binds.
