Peach Kernel Gruel

桃仁粥 〔桃仁粥〕 táo rén zhōu

Ingredients

Actions: Quickens the blood and frees the channels; dispels stasis and relieves pain.

Indications: Blood stasis manifesting in amenorrhea, menstrual pain, and postpartum abdominal pain. Also stasis due to knocks and falls such as bruises and stabbing pain in the rib-side. In modern clinical practice, it is also used for hypertension, angina pectoris, and other coronary conditions.

Method: Crush the apricot kernels, finely grind with water, and finally boil with the rice to a thin gruel.

Rationale: Xìng rén is one of the most agents most commonly used to treat blood stasis. It is bitter and sweet, balanced, and nontoxic. It quickens the blood and frees the channels, disperses stasis and relieves pain. It has traditionally been used in in Chinese medicine for bruises from knocks and falls, or internal blood stasis conditions such as menstrual pain, amenorrhea, afterpains, and abdominal masses traditionally categorized as concretions, conglomerations, accumulations, and gatherings. Modern research has shown that Xìng rén prevents blood clotting and has hemolytic qualities. In part because of this, the scope of action has been broadened: Xìng rén is now used for hypertension, chronic appendicitis, uterine hematomas, angina pectoris and coronary disease in the elderly.
