Dioscorea Flour Gruel
薯蓣拔粥 〔薯蕷拔粥〕 shǔ yù bá zhōu

Ingredients
- Shēng shān yào (生山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma Crudum, raw dioscorea [root]) 100–15g
- Xiǎo mài miàn fěnw (小麦面粉 Tritici Farina, wheat flour) 60–90g
- Cōng bái (葱白 Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, scallion white)
- Jiāng zhī (姜汁 Zingiberis Rhizomatis Succus, ginger juice)
- Chì shā táng (赤沙糖 Saccharon Granulatum Rubrum, brown sugar)
Actions: Nourishes heart qì; fortifies the spleen.
Indications: Insufficiency of heart qì with flusteredness and throbbing of the heart, spontaneous sweating or night sweating; spleen-stomach vacuity or vacuity taxation dispersion-thirst (xiāo kě) with poor appetite and digestion, enduring diarrhea, seminal emission and vaginal discharge.
Method: Wash, peel, and crush the fresh dioscorea (or grind the regular dried form to a powder). Boil the dioscorea with the flour until cooked. Add the other ingredients, and bring to the boil twice.
Rationale: Shān yào is sweet and balanced. It enters the spleen, lung, and kidney channels. It therefore has a powerful general supplementing action on the body. Wheat flour supplements vacuity, fills out the body, thickens the stomach and intestines, increases strength, nourishes the heart, harmonizes the blood, and fortifies the spleen contains starch, protein, sugars, fiber, a small amount of fat, and vitamin B. Modern research shows that it is a highly nutritious foodstuff containing starch, protein, sugars, fiber, a small amount of fat, and vitamin B.
