Liver-Coursing Depression-Resolving Decoction

疏肝解郁汤 〔疏肝解鬱湯〕shū gān jiě yù tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Course the liver and resolves depression; quickens the blood and moves stasis.

Indication: Qì and blood stagnation with inhibited menstruation, scant clotted menstrual discharge, rib-side pain, aching lumbus, abdominal distension and pain, belching, and a stringlike pulse.

Category:

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Xiāng fù, Qīng pí, Chái hú, and charred Chuān liàn zǐ course the liver and rectify qì, thereby resolving the binding depression of liver qì. Yù jīn, Dān shēn, Chuān xiōng, Hóng zé lán (or Zé lán), and Yán hú suǒ quicken the blood and dispel stasis, thereby moving the liver blood stasis. When orderly reaching of liver qì is restored, the distension and pain disappear. When the blood stasis is eliminated, menstruation is uninhibited, menstrual discharge reassumes normal volume, and the clots disappear.

Variations: Pale scant flow without clots: Add Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica).
