使君子丸 〔使君子丸〕 shǐ jūn zǐ wán
Source: Hé Jì Jú Fāng 和剂局方
Ingredients
- Shǐ jūn zǐ (使君子 Quisqualis Fructus, quisqualis [fruit]) 10g
- Hòu pò (厚朴 Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, officinal magnolia bark) 1g
- Chén pí (陈皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel) 1g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 1g
Indications: The five gān (lung, spleen, kidney, heart, and kidney gān) in children with spleen-stomach disharmony, and bloating in the heart [region] and abdomen.
Method: Grind to a powder, mix with honey, and form into 500 mg pills.
Dosage: 1 pill for children over 3 years old, and half for children under 3 years old.
Rationale: Shǐ jūn zǐ, the sovereign agent, is warm and sweet and is considered to be nontoxic or only slight toxic. It not only kills worms, but also disperses stagnation (i.e., stimulates peristalsis), thereby hastening their passage through the intestines. It is neither acrid nor bitter, and does not have the harshness of other worm-expelling agents. Furthermore, it also fortifies the spleen and increases the appetite, as well as reducing heat effusion. Hòu pò, Chén pí, and Chuān xiōng fortify the spleen and stomach. Hot drinks should be avoided after taking Shǐ jūn zǐ if diarrhea and hiccup it to be avoided.
