Source: Yī Zōng Jīn Jiàn, Yǎn Kē Xīn Fǎ Yào Jué 医宗金鉴‧眼科心法要诀

Ingredients:

• Lú gān shí (炉甘石 Calamina , calamine) 120g
• Péng shā (硼砂 Borax , borax) 4.5g
• Shí yàn (石燕 Spiriferae Fossilia, spirifer fossil) 4.5g
• Hǔ pò (琥珀 Succinum , amber) 4.5g
• Zhū shā (朱砂 Cinnabaris , cinnabar) 4.5g
• Yīng shǐ bái (鹰屎白 Aquilae Faeces, eagle droppings) 0.45 gr (or Bái dīng xiāng (白丁香 Passeris Faeces, sparrow's droppings))
• Bīng piàn (冰片 Borneolum , borneol) 0.45g
• Shè xiāng (麝香 Moschus , musk) 0.45g

Action:

Indication: Lung-liver wind-heat attacking the eyes causes fiery heat in the eyes lids and stabbing pain in the eyeballs.

Category:

Method: Sparrow's droppings (bái dīng xiāng) can be used instead of eagle's droppings. Heat the calamine to red hot in an earthenware pot, cool, water-grind in coptis water, then soak in a decoction of coptis scutellaria and phellodendron and boil dry. Grind finely with other agents.

Dosage: Mix a small amount with water each time and dab on the eyes.

Variations:

• Dry eyes without tearing: Add Xióng dǎn (熊胆 Ursi Vesica Fellea, bear's gallbladder) and Fēng mì (蜂蜜 Mel , honey).
• Blood screens: Add ē wèi (阿魏 Ferulae Resina, asafetida).
• Yellow screens: Add Jī nèi jīn (鸡内金 Galli Gigeriae Endothelium Corneum, gizzard lining).
• Wind-heat screens: Add Ruí rén (蕤仁 Prinsepiae Nux, prinsepia [seed])).
• Heat screens: Add Zhēn zhū (珍珠 Margarita , pearl) and Niú huáng (牛黄 Bovis Calculus, bovine bezoar).
• Cold screens: Add Fù zǐ (附子 Aconiti Radix Lateralis Praeparata, aconite [accessory root]) and Xióng huáng (雄黄 Realgar , realgar).
• Old screens: Double the Péng shā (硼砂 Borax , borax) and add Zhú yī (竹衣 Phyllostachydis Sulphureae Membrana Interior, ).
