Damp Depression Decoction
湿郁汤 〔濕鬱湯〕shī yù tāng

Ingredients:
- Cāng zhú (苍朮 Atractylodis Rhizoma, atractylodes [rhizome]) 15g
- Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 10g
- Hòu pò (厚朴 Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, officinal magnolia bark) (stir-fried with ginger juice) 10g
- Bàn xià (半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma, pinellia [rhizome]) (processed) 10g
- Bái fú líng (白茯苓 Poria Alba, white poria) 10g
- Qiāng huó (羌活 Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, notopterygium [root]) 10g
- Dú huó (独活 Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, pubescent angelica) 10g
- Xiāng fù (香附 Cyperi Rhizoma, cyperus [rhizome]) 6g
- Jú pí (橘皮 Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, tangerine peel) 6g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 6g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 3g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 5 slices
Action: Fortifies the spleen and eliminates dampness; dispels wind and relieves pain.
Indication: Wind-damp (rheumatism) characterized by heaviness, pain, numbness and tingling of the skin, and pain and heaviness in the joints exacerbated by cold weather, as well as generalfatigue. Tongue fur: White and slimy. Pulse: Soggy and moderate.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Cāng zhú moves the spleen and dries dampness, addressing dampness that arises from within. It also dispels wind and overcomes dampness, addressing dampness that comes from without. Hence, it is the sovereign agent. Chuān xiōng, Qiāng huó, and Dú huó dispel with wind-damp and relieve impediment (bì) pain. Bái zhú and Fú líng fortify the spleen and percolate dampness. Chén pí and Hòu pò move qì and transform dampness. Xiāng fù and Bàn xià loosen the center and downbear turbidity, enhancing spleen-stomach function. Gān cǎo harmonizes all the agents in the formula.
