Mulberry Fruit Gruel
桑仁粥 〔桑仁粥〕 sāng rén zhōu

Ingredients
- Sāng shèn (桑椹 Mori Fructus, mulberry) 20–30g
- Nuò mǐ (糯米 Oryzae Glutinosae Semen, glutinous rice) 60g
- Bīng táng (冰糖 Saccharon Crystallinum, rock candy) 1 pinch
Actions: Supplements the liver and enriches the kidney; nourishes the blood and brightens the eyes.
Indications: Liver-kidney blood vacuity manifesting as dizziness, diminished visual acuity, tinnitus, limp aching lumbus and knees,
Method: Soak mulberry fruit and boil with rice to a thick gruel, adding just before the end. If fresh mulberry fruits are used, pick ripe dark-colored ones, and increase to 30–60 gr, and omit soaking.
Rationale: Sāng shèn is sweet, cold, and nontoxic. It enters the liver and kidney channels. It supplements the liver, boosts the kidney, extinguishes wind, and enriches humor, and is used to treat liver-kidney depletion, dispersion-thirst, constipation, dim vision, tinnitus, scrofula, and inhibited movement of the joints. Modern research shows that it contains sugars, malic acid, carotene, and vitamins B1, B2, C, A, and D. Sāng shèn oil contains linoleic and stearic acid. Pharmacological research shows that Sāng shèn increases the secretion of stomach juices and stimulates intestinal peristalsis.
