Frankincense Pain-Relieving Pill
乳香定痛丸 〔乳香定痛丸〕 rǔ xiāng dìng tòng wán

Ingredients
- Cāng zhú (苍朮 Atractylodis Rhizoma, atractylodes [rhizome]) 12g
- Chuān wū (川乌 Aconiti Radix, aconite main root) 10g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 10g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 10g
- Dīng xiāng (丁香 Caryophylli Flos, clove) 6g
- Rǔ xiāng (乳香 Olibanum , frankincense) 3g
- Mò yào (没药 Myrrha , myrrh) 3g
- Dà zǎo (大枣 Jujubae Fructus, jujube) 8 pieces
Actions: Dispels wind and eliminates dampness; warms the channels and disperses cold; quickens the connecting channels and checks pain.
Indications: Cold-damp white tiger joint-running wind (lì jié fēng), characterized by generalized pain, heavy, cold limbs, and hypertonicity of the hands. Tongue fur: White and slimy. Pulse: Stringlike and slow.
Rationale: Cāng zhú is warm, acrid, and bitter; it can move the spleen and dry dampness, as well as dispelling wind and relieving pain. Hence, it is used in large doses. Chuān wū is acrid and very hot. It warms and frees the channels and network vessels, dispelling wind and overcoming dampness, as well as dispersing cold and relieving pain. Dāng guī, Chuān xiōng, and Dà zǎo nourish and quicken the blood, helping the agents that dispel wind and frees the network vessels. Dāng guī and Chuān xiōng help the Fù zǐ man root to disperse cold and relieve pain. Dīng xiāng warms the stomach and disperses cold; it helps the Cāng zhú to warm and disperse the cold evil. Rǔ xiāng and Mò yào disperse stasis and relieve pain.
