Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Huáng lián, Huáng qín, and Zhī zǐ are cold and bitter, and penetrate the interior. They clear heat and resolve toxin. Bò hé, Lián qiào, and Jié gěng are acrid and dispersing, and enter the exterior. All these agents together cause the heat toxin to be dispersed internally and discharged from the body enhancing the heat-clearing and toxin-resolving action of the formula. Dāng guī, Bái sháo, and Mù xiāng move qì and quicken the blood to disperse swelling and relieve pain. Bīng láng and Dà huáng move qì and free the stool, carrying fire toxin out of the body. Gān cǎo helps the heat-clearing and toxin resolving action of Huáng lián.
