Ingredients

• Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) 9g
• Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 9g
• Lián qiào (连翘 Forsythiae Fructus, forsythia [fruit]) 9g
• Sāng bái pí (桑白皮 Mori Cortex, mulberry bark) 4g
• Shēng dì huáng (生地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Exsiccata seu Recens, dried/fresh rehmannia [root]) 15g
• Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) 9g
• Táo rén (桃仁 Persicae Semen, peach kernel) 9g
• Hóng huā (红花 Carthami Flos, carthamus [flower]) 6g
• Chuān pò (川朴 Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex Sichuanensis%#%, Sìchuān magnolia [bark]) 9g
• Zhǐ ké (qiào) (枳壳 Aurantii Fructus, bitter orange) 9g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 6g

Actions: Clears heat and resolves toxin; quickens the blood and transforms stasis.

Indications: Wind-heat repletion patterns with both eyes red and swollen (red swollen eyes), tearing, aversion to light (photophobia), itchy eyes, and copious discharge. Pulse: Rapid. Tongue: Red with yellow fur. In clinical practice, this formula is used to treat hordeolum (sty), vesicular ophthalmitis, or scleritis manifesting in these symptoms.

Method: Decoct with water.

Variations:

• Pronounced heat and fire: Add Pú gōng yīng (蒲公英 Taraxaci Herba, dandelion) and Lóng dǎn (龙胆 Gentianae Radix, gentian [root]).
• Pronounced wind and itching: Add Fáng fēng (防风 Saposhnikoviae Radix, saposhnikovia) and Chán tuì (蝉蜕 Cicadae Periostracum, cicada molting).
• Enduring condition of red eyes and blood stasis: Add Sān qī (三七 Notoginseng Radix, notoginseng [root]) and Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]).
• Scleritis: Add Bǎi bù (百部 Stemonae Radix, stemona [root]) and Sān qī (三七 Notoginseng Radix, notoginseng [root]).
