Abdominal urgency and heaviness in the rectum

里急后重 〔裏急後重〕 lǐ jí hòu zhòng

Also tenesmus. From The Classic of Difficult Issues (难经 nàn jīng, 56). Urge to defecate with abdominal pain, pressure in the rectum, and difficult defecation. Abdominal urgency and heaviness in the rectum is mostly caused by damp-heat and is one of the main signs of dysentery.

Etymology

Chinese: 裏 lǐ, interior; 急 jí, urgency; 后 hòu, posterior, 重 zhòng, heaviness.
